I walked through a field of wild flowers. The flowers were bright red and blue, and overhead swallows dived and chattered, their cheerful voices accompanying me as I made my way barefoot across the meadow. Soon I approached the edge of a forest. Aged trees spread their twisted boughs towards me, beckoning me to enter. I love the trees and felt no fear as I threw my arms around the craggy trunk of a sturdy old friend. Sunlight slanted down through the leafy canopy as I walked along a sandy path further into the woods. Soon a beam of light welcomed me to sit at the base of an old tree. I sat with my back against the bark and waited.
A very small figure appeared at my elbow. 'Hello!' I said 'What do you want?' The little being in a tall pointed hat put his head on one side and peered at me. 'What do you want?' he said. 'I don't know' I replied 'Who are you?' Once again, he stared at me and said 'Who are you?' I felt a little exasperated at this, and asked him 'Do you have a message for me?' 'Do you have a message for me?' he replied. 'What is this?' I said becoming annoyed 'Riddle time?' 'I don't know' he said 'What is this?'
I got up and walked deeper into the woods. The little being came along beside me. 'Why are you following me?' I said 'Go away!' 'Why are you following me?' was the already anticipated reply. This conversation was going nowhere. The forest opened out into a large grassy field. I threw down a blanket and lay in the long grass. My new friend sat down beside me.
'You will have to go away now' I said 'I need to concentrate on my body - I need to listen to what it wants to tell me'
'Its your heart' said the little being in the pointed hat. 'You have to learn to play again. You have to learn to know joy again. You have to open your heart'
'How do you know?' I asked him 'How do you know any of this about me?'. 'How do you know?' he said with a smirk.
'You are having a game with me!' I said 'You are playing with me!'
'Correct! I can play with you, and you can play with me - but you can't play with them' The little being pointed at all the other people in my life. 'With me, you kind of blend' he said, 'If I put my arm out, I can put it right through you' And he put out his arm and passed it right into my body. 'See?'
I saw. 'Don't muck about!' I said 'What else can you tell me?'
'When you play with me, its different from how you play with them. With them, you can't merge with them - they stay separate from you - you can bounce off them and it's more real - in a sense. With me there is no edge to you or me - we can roll into one another and play the game as one player'
'It's easier for me to play like that' I said.
'I know it's easier - but its not who you are... at least not yet'
'So the message is to play?'
'Indeed it is!'
My new friend with the pointed hat has taken up residence. I rather like him :-)
