I dearly love the trees in my neighbourhood, and know many of them quite well. Now I want to know more about our ancient trees - the really old ones who hold so much wisdom if we did but know it. Where are these trees and how can I get to spend time with them? I've been looking at a site called the ancient tree hunt, and it is good to find there are some very old trees in Devon. Many seem to be around Dartmoor, but there are some around this neck of the woods too. I want to write about these trees. I want to spread the word.
Being an unashamed tree hugger, I want to try to bring to the attention of others how very important our trees are. Until you have spent time sitting with a tree, you have never lived! Not really. Until you get that connection with a life that is so very similar to our own, but also so very different, your capacity to embrace all living things must surely be limited. Who tells our children that trees are living beings just like us? Nobody told me, and I never told my children because I hadn't worked it out. All I knew back then was the pain I felt when my neighbour began to cut some old oaks down on his land. I was devastated.
Now I am beginning to get it. Now I deeply appreciate our Trees. Now I know we need them like never before.
Now I want to get to know the old ones. Perhaps they will share with me some of their secrets!
